Four Farthings

A series of concerts set in the Four Farthings of the Shire.

Four Farthing Concerts

Four Farthing Concerts

In order to bring their music to a much wider audience the Songburrow Strollers conceived an ambitious plan - a lesuirely tour of the Four Farthings of the Shire that would see them visiting Frogmorton, Bywater and Brokenborings.

Somehow they also found time to return to their home for a spectacular anniversary celebration in the grounds of Songburrow Hall that would set the tone for all of their future concerts.

Eastfarthing Concert

Eastfarthing Concert

The Floating Log, Frogmorton

Simbo, Rowana, Lina, Lothilia

Frogmorton itself doesn't make an obvious venue for a concert given the peculiar habbits of the locals and the predominately damp and boggy surrounds with only a single inn in the vicinity - The Floating Log. Undeterred the Strollers had persuaded the innkeeper Ponto Hopsbloom to let them play on the grounds directly behind the inn.

Taking up position under the swaying bows of the great willows lining the banks of the river proved to be the Strollers masterstroke and a surprisingly picturesque start to their first full series of concerts. We need not mention the precariousness of the slippery grass underfoot or the interesting and abundant wildlife that came up to enjoy the Strollers music with the local patrons that fine spring day.

Westfarthing Concert

Three Farthing Stone, Bywater

Simbo, Rowana, Lina, Lothilia

For their visit to the Eastfarthing the Strollers chose an important but often overlooked local landmark - the Three Farthing Stone. How appropriate that the stone not only marked a point near the very centre of the Shire but also the symbolic midway point in the bands opening tour.

Interestingly this was one of the few occasions that the band members chose not to wear their now iconic green wool coats, on account of the difficult travelling conditions. It also coincided with an important historical trip - the first of its kind to present a series of informative, open lectures and stories in the field and made freely accessible to all.

Northfarthing Concert

The Greenfields

Simbo, Rowana, Lina

For this third concert the Strollers had to do without Miss Lothilia Featherfoot, a stalwart of the band up until this point.

Unperturbed and with Miss Willowwood's guidance on the local customs and traditions of the Greenfields they were able to present not just a concert but an historic overview of the region complete with stories and songs.

In a fitting and moving tribute Master Simbo Rumblebelly presented his epic (and now classic) poem An Ode to the Greenfields, endearing himself and the band to the uncompromising locals, many whom had travelled a considerable distance to hear the Strollers play.

Southfarthing Concert

Returning home to Songburrow and the familiar sights of the Southfarthing the Strollers had one last concert to perform.

On this ocassion they would be called to play at a very special event, none other than the third anniversary of the Grand Order of the Lost Mathom. An event that would be long talked about and would undoubtably be their finest concert to date. A fitting end to their tour of the Four Farthings of the Shire.
