Below is the very basic tune and the words I have written to fit.((Greywolf is my nom de plume for poetry and music))

Beware the wiles of the travelling man
He’ll spin you a tale and then take what he can
With words sweet as honey, he’ll fashion his charms
Leaves women in trouble and men up in arms

Too ra la too ra la too ra lye ay
Look to the horizon at the end of the day
Retreat to your house and safeguard your clan
Away from the wiles of the travelling man

Young maidens take heed as I tell you his crimes
For many a young woman has fell for his rhymes
He’ll promise you riches, but your virtue he’ll take
And leave like the mist whilst the ‘bread’s’ left to bake

Too ra la too ra la too ra lye ay
Look to the horizon at the end of the day
Retreat to your house and safeguard your clan
Away from the wiles of the travelling man

Many a cuckoo has feathered its nest
Wherever this traveller has been welcomed as guest
He’s greeted with friendship and arms open wide
But it’s not the arms he wants to get inside.

Too ra la too ra la too ra lye ay
Look to the horizon at the end of the day
Retreat to your house and safeguard your clan
Away from the wiles of the travelling man

Young men beware should he draw forth his blade
For it was on a sword edge his fortune was made
He’d shout ‘stand and deliver’ if you answered him ‘Nay’
His sword would make sure your opinion would sway.

Too ra la too ra la too ra lye ay
Look to the horizon at the end of the day
Retreat to your house and safeguard your clan
Away from the wiles of the travelling man

In the hills up near Archet they made him their chief
Unaware that the man was a rogue and a thief
He stole and he squandered and bled the town dry
Left the men dead and the women to cry.

Too ra la too ra la too ra lye ay
Look to the horizon at the end of the day
Retreat to your house and safeguard your clan
Away from the wiles of the travelling man

So he set off to prey on more gullible fools
Walking the roads with his packhorse and mules
If you see him coming your stock you should hide
And batten your doors with your kinfolk inside.

Too ra la too ra la too ra lye ay
Look to the horizon at the end of the day
Retreat to your house and safeguard your clan
Away from the wiles of the travelling man

He’s murdered and plundered a swathe ‘cross the land
And many a young man has died at his hand
As for the women, I’m afraid he did worse
But I’m not so crude as to commit them to verse

Too ra la too ra la too ra lye ay
Look to the horizon at the end of the day
Retreat to your house and safeguard your clan
Away from the wiles of the travelling man
